Guidelines on the Receiving and Shipping of Human Remains
The use of Zieglers and dry ice should be discouraged.
The remains should be placed into a light-weight plastic pouch with six FROZEN ice packs.
The shipping funeral director should attach a bright-colored tag or card (large enough to attract attention) to the casket as well as the shipping papers, reminding the receiving funeral director to remove the Ziegler. The pouch and ice packs should be removed and placed in the casket (at the foot) for burial with the remains.
When a funeral director receives the remains for immediate burial (and the casket is not to be taken to a receiving chapel), the Ziegler, if any, should be removed. The pouch and the ice packs should be removed and placed in the casket (at the foot) for burial with the remains.
Minimum Shipment
In the event of a “JFDA shipment,” the remains are to be shipped in a pouch with six frozen ice packs and in a “combination shipping container” (a wooden tray, pressed wood sides, with the cover made of wood or cardboard).
Shipments to or from Non-JFDA Members
The JFDA director should apprise the non-JFDA member of these receiving and shipping guidelines.
